Testing has begun on a new traffic lights system that will be placed on two busy road links between the M6 motorway and the eastbound M62 near Warrington, Cheshire in the hope that it will ease motorway congestion.

The new trials which is expected to cost in the region of £7m aim to ease traffic at the Croft Interchange, where Junction 21A of the M6 meets Junction 10 of the M62.

If the trials are successful it will be turned on fully in December and then after being monitored for a year it will be rolled out to other motorways in the Country. Previously traffic lights have only been installed on Motorway slip roads.

Highways England said electronic information signs and variable mandatory speed limits on the M62 will be used alongside the traffic lights to “provide smoother traffic flows”.
